Für unsere nächste Unterkunft waren wir noch viel zu früh dran, also haben wir uns wieder ein Castle angesehen: Portchester.
For our next lodging we were still way too early, so we looked once again at a castle: Portchester.
Doch zunächst stand hier ein römisches Fort, Teil einer Kette entlang der „Sachsenküste“. So könnte das im 3. Jahrhundert ausgesehen haben, als das Fort gebaut wurde:

In einer Ecke des riesigen Quadrates steht eine Kirche mit Friedhof.
In one corner of the huge square, there is a church with a cemetery.
Es gab hier ein kleines Augustiner-Kloster, ab 1128. Die Augustiner blieben nur 20 Jahre, doch die kleine Kirche blieb stehen.
There used to be a tiny Augustinian priory here, starting in 1128. The Augustinians only stayed for 20 years, but the little church remained.

Portchester Castle wurde im 12. Jahrhundert in der nordwestlichen Ecke des Forts gebaut, mit einem großen Burgfried, der von Hof und Mauern umgeben war.
Portchester Castle was built in the northwest corner of the forts during the 12th century, with a large keep which was surrounded by an inner bailey and walls.

Zwischen 1665 und 1815 diente die Burg als Kriegsgefangenenlager. In den letzten Jahren dieses Zeitraums waren bis zu 8000 Menschen hier eingesperrt.
Between 1665 and 1815 the Castle served as a prisoner of war camp. In the last years of that time up to 8000 people were imprisoned here.
Übrigens: ein Admiral oder Feldmarschall konnte gegen 60 einfache Soldaten oder Matrosen eingetauscht werden.
By the way: an admiral or field marshal could be exchanged for 60 common soldiers or sailors.
Es gab hier auch viele Gefangene aus der Karibik oder anderen heißen Gegenden, die für das englische Wetter so gar nicht ausgerüstet waren.
There were also a lot of prisoners here from the Caribbean or other hot landscapes, who were so very unequipped for the English weather.
Zwischen 1961 und 1979 wurden hier auch Ausgrabungen vorgenommen. Dabei kamen eine Menge unterschiedlicher Dinge zu Tage. Zum Beispiel Scherben von Glasscheiben aus dem 14. Jahrhundert.

Wir sind an die Küste gefahren – bei etwas besserem Wetter als gestern.
We drove to the coast – the weather being a bit better than yesterday.
Wir wollten uns diese Klamm ansehen, die älteste Touristenattraktion auf der Insel.
We wanted to take a look at this ravine, the oldest tourist attraction on the island.
Ja, was sollen wir sagen? Es gab ein paar interessante Pflanzen …
Well, what shall we say? There were a few interesting plants …
… und diesen spektakulären „Wasserfall“. Naja, immerhin war der Eintritt nicht furchtbar teuer.

Wir sind dann weitergefahren, um uns Appuldurcombe House anzusehen. Immerhin kam die Sonne mal kurz raus!
We then drove on to take a look at Appuldurcombe House. At least the sun did come out for a spell!
Tja, dieses Haus. Gebaut im 18. Jahrhundert und Sitz der Worsley-Familie. Und ein Jahrhundert lang war es wohl das beste Haus auf der Insel.
Well, this house. Built in the 18th century and seat of the Worsley family. And for one century, it seems it was the finest house on the island.
Hier und da gibt es kleine schöne Details zu entdecken, wie hier. Doch das meiste ist eher unaufregend.
Here and there you can discover nice details like here. But for the most part the ruins are rather not so exciting.
Die Geschichte von Sir Richard Worsley und seiner Frau Seymour Fleming ist auch nicht erhebend. Sie war ganze 17 als er sie geheiratet hat – aber sie war reich! Er hat ihr Geld durchgebracht, schließlich war sie jetzt sein Eigentum … die Geschichte wird noch schlimmer, Ihr könnt sie gerne woanders nachlesen.
The story of Sir Richard Worsley and his wife Seymour Fleming is also not really uplifting. She was barely 17 when he married her – but she was rich! He then proceeded to spend her money, after all now she was his property … and the story just gets worse from there, you are very welcome to read up on it somewhere else.

Nein, das ist keine Rakete. Im Volksmund nennt man dieses Türmchen die Pfeffermühle. Der Sage nach musste der Lord of Chale, der Wein aus einem Wrack gestohlen hatte, zur Strafe hier eine kleine Kapelle mit Leuchtturm bauen. – Und das ist alles, was noch übrig ist.
No, this is not a rocket. The popular name for this little tower is the pepperpot. According to legend, the Lord of Chale, who had stolen wine from a shipwreck, as penance had to build a small chapel with a beacon here. – And this is all that is left.
Und jetzt, bevor der nächste Regen kommt: nochmal zum Carisbrooke Castle.

Ihr wisst ja schon, dass Beatrice hier gelebt hat. Doch lange davor residierte hier Countess Isabella de Fortibus, ab 1262. Und das war „ihr“ Fenster, mit buntem Glas geschmückt.
You do know already that Beatrice lived here. But long before that, Countess Isabella de Fortibus resided here, starting in 1262. And this here was „her“ window, decorated with coloured glass.
Man sagt, dass sie gerne hier saß – ungefähr so, nehme ich an.
It is said that she liked to sit here – just like this, I am sure.
Und noch ein berühmtes Fenster. Ihr erinnert Euch an die paar Tage, die Charles I. auf Hurst Castle eingesperrt war? Davor war er hier gefangen. Er hat mehrere Ausbruchsversuche unternommen – zum Beispiel durch die Stäbe dieses Fensters. Nur blieb er auf halbem Wege stecken …
And another famous window. You remember the short incarceration of Charles I on Hurst Castle? Before that he was prisoner here. He tried to escape several times – once for example through the bars of this window. Unfortunately he got stuck halfway through …
Heute ist alles ein bisschen schwierig … weil ich, die Kirsche, über Nacht einen richtig super Schnupfen entwickelt habe, und weil der Tag morgens schon mit Regen losging. Und wir wollten doch zum Carisbrooke Castle!
Today everything is a bit difficult … because I, Kirsche, over night developed a wonderfully nasty cold, and because in the morning already the day started with rain. And we had been planning to go see Carisbrooke Castle!
Wir haben es dann natürlich doch versucht … und es gibt hier eine Menge zu sehen, wie das Modell zeigt.
Of course then we gave it a try after all … and there is so much to see here, as the model shows.
Das Wetter hat sich aber nicht beruhigt. Also haben wir uns alles angesehen, was überdacht war. Zuerst: St Nicholas-in-Castro. Das erste Mal wurde hier eine Kapelle 1086 erwähnt. Der heutige Bau wurde 1904/1905 wieder aufgebaut.
But the weather refused to get any better. So we took a look at all the things where we had a roof over our heads. First of all: St Nicholas-in-Castro. 1086 a chapel was mentioned here for the first time. Today’s structure was rebuilt in 1904/1905.
Die Bänke sind aus dem Holz eines der letzten hölzernen Kriegsschiffe, der HMS Nettle, geschnitzt. Uns hat aber vor allem die Decke gefallen.
The pews are carved out of the wood of one of the last wooden warships, the HMB Nettle. But we were mainly impressed by the ceiling.
Als nächstes haben wir uns das kleine Museum angesehen. Hier habt Ihr ein „Bartmann Jug“ aus Steingut. Nach 1634 wurden diese Krüge oft Bellarmine genannt, um sich über den ungeliebten Kardinal Robert Bellarmine lustig zu machen.
Next we took a look at the little museum. Here you have a stoneware „Bartmann Jug“ (German for „bearded man“). After 1634 these jugs were often called Bellarmine, to ridicule the unpopular cardinal Robert Bellarmine.
Und dieses Prachtstück ist eine Orgel aus dem Jahr 1602 und eine der ältesten noch spielbaren Orgeln in Großbritannien. Dies war ein Geschenk an Prinzessin Beatrice zu ihrem 80. Geburtstag.
And this beauty here is an organ built in 1602, and one of the oldest in Great Britain which is still in playing order. It was a present to Princess Beatrice for her 80th birthday.

Und hier etwas ganz außergewöhnliches: ein Seismoskop, von Zhang Heng in China erfunden, um Erdbeben zu entdecken. Die Drachen sind an den acht Punkten des Kompasses ausgerichtet. Und wenn eine Erdbebenwelle das Seismoskop erreicht, spuckt der Drache eine Kugel in das Krötenmaul unter ihm.
And here something really extraordinary: a seismoscope, invented by Zhand Heng in China, to detect earthquakes. The dragons are arranged according to the eight points of the compass. And when an earthquake wave reaches the seismoscope, the dragon spits a ball into the mouth of the toad beneath it.
Dann sind wir schnell durch den Regen rüber zum Stall der Esel. Hier seht Ihr Jack.
Then we quickly rushed through the rain to the donkey stable. Here you can see Jack.
Und warum gibt es hier Esel? Na, die arbeiten hier! 1696 wurde das erste Mal erwähnt, dass Esel das Laufrad betätigten, um Wasser aus dem 49m tiefen Brunnen zu holen.
And why are there donkeys here? Well, they work here! The first time that it was mentioned that donkeys move the treadwheel to get water out of the 49m deep well, was 1696.
Ursprünglich gab es hier in der Burg einen Brunnen, der Regenwasser auffing. Offensichtlich unpraktisch in einem heißen Sommer … also wurde der andere Brunnen gegraben, der das Grundwasser erreicht.
Originally here at the castle there was a well that caught rainwater. Obviously not a very practical solution for hot summers … so the other well was dug, which reaches the groundwater.
Übrigens: früher mussten die Esel hier stundenlang schuften, aber heute arbeiten sie nur ein, zwei Minuten, und auf jeden Fall nur so lange, wie sie auch Lust haben. – Wir können das bezeugen. Als Jack nicht mehr wollte, ist er einfach aus dem Rad gelaufen, und das wars.
By the way: way in the past the donkeys had to work hard for hours, but today they only work for one or two minutes, in any case only for as long as they feel like it. – We can vouch for that. When Jack did not want to go on, he simply stepped out of the wheel, and that was that.
Unten links im großen Gebäude ist das Museum, das kleinere Haus rechts beherbergt den Brunnen. Jetzt gibt es dann wohl nur noch unbedachte Dinge zu sehen … also versuchen wir es mal mit Prinzessin Beatrices Garten.
Down on the left in the big building you find the museum, the smaller house on the right shelters the well. It looks like all that is left for us to look at is on the outside … so now we give Princess Beatrice’s Garden a try.
Sieht ganz nett aus, nicht wahr? Beatrice, Königin Victorias jüngste Tochter, verbrachte ab 1913 ihre Sommer hier.
Looks kind of nice, don’t you think? Beatrice, Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter, spent her summers here, starting in 1913.
Aber: hab ich schon erwähnt, dass es geregnet hat? Es war nass!
But: did I mention that it was raining? It was wet!
Also haben wir uns nur schnell noch „Warrior“ angesehen. Dieses Pferd, das auf der Isle of Wight geboren wurde, kam im 1. Weltkrieg zum Einsatz. Es trug General Jack Seely (übrigens ein guter Freund von Winston Churchill). Nach dem Krieg kam Warrior zurück auf die Insel, wo er mit 33 Jahren starb. In der Zeitung gab es dazu einen Nachruf: „Das Pferd, das die Deutschen nicht töten konnten.“
So we only rushed to take a look at „Warrior“. This horse which was born on the Isle of Wight, was employed during World War I. It carried General Jack Seely (a very good friend of Winston Churchill, by the way). After the war, Warrior came back to the island, where he died at the age of 33. In the newspaper there was an obituary: „Horse the Germans Could Not Kill.“
Wir haben dann doch noch eine kleine überdachte Ecke gefunden … aber da stand nur eine Kanone rum …
We then did find one more corner with a roof … but all they had there, was a cannon standing around …

Nachdem vor dem Haus gerade eine Menge Menschen auf Einlass warteten, blieben wir erst mal draußen. Hier der erste Hinweis:
Since in front of the house there was a lot of people waiting to get in, we stayed outside for now. Here the first clue:
Ja, diesen Baum hier hat Königin Victoria gepflanzt. Und wir sehen uns jetzt den „Walled Garden“ an, den sie und Albert angelegt haben.
Yes, this tree here was planted by Queen Victoria. And now we take a look at the „Walled Garden“ that she and Albert set up.
Oh, da hat jemand fast vergessen, dass ja jetzt die Touristen kommen. Schnell verschwinden bevor der Trubel losgeht. – Hier auf der Isle of White gibt es keine von den grauen Eichhörnchen, die überall die einheimischen roten vertreiben.
Oops, somebody almost forgot that now all the tourists come. Rather disappear in a hurry before the crowds come. – Here on the Isle of Wight they don’t have any grey squirrels which everywhere else push aside the local red ones.

Offensichtlich wird versucht, hier die Pflanzen beizubehalten, die vom königlichen Paar gepflanzt wurden.
Obviously they try to stick to the plants that the royal couple planted here.
Ein wunderschöner Garten, sehr farbenfroh.
A beautiful garden, very colourful.
Aber wie schon erwähnt, es gibt hier auch viel Obst. Und dann haben wir Kürbisse entdeckt, Hopfen … Dies ist durchaus auch ein Nutzgarten.
But as I mentioned before, you find also lots of fruit here. And then we discovered pumpkins, hops … This really is also a kitchen garden.
Auch, wenn das Blumenmeer natürlich am schönsten ist!
But of course, this sea of flowers is the most beautiful!

Jetzt stehen hier keine wartenden Leute mehr, also können wir uns das Haus ansehen.

Es gibt hier unheimlich viele Kunstgegenstände zu sehen. Beide, Victoria und Albert liebten Kunst und haben sich gerne gegenseitig Geschenke gemacht. Hier ist Corinna, eine griechische Dichterin, dargestellt. Die Büste hat Victoria ihrem Albert geschenkt, an ihrem eigenen 30. Geburtstag.
You can see an endless number of art objects here. Both of them, Victoria and Albert loved art and often gave each other presents. Here you see Corinna, a Greek poet, portrayed. Victoria gave this bust to Albert, on her own 30th birthday.
Und hier haben wir: genau, Kühe! 1868 war Victoria bei Invertrosachs und sah dort wohl Kühe wie auf dem Bild, das dann 1876 für sie gemalt wurde.
And here you see: exactly, cows! 1868 Victoria was in the are of Invertrosachs and saw cows there – presumably like these here, which were painted for her in 1876.
Man läuft hier den Gang entlang und sieht sich die Kunstgegenstände an. Und dann fällt einem auf einmal ein, dass man sich den Raum selber auch ansehen sollte. Die Böden, die Möbel, die aufwändige Zimmerdecke … es gibt so viel zu sehen!
You walk along this hallway and look at all the art. And then all of a sudden, you remember to also take a closer look at the room itself. The floors, the furniture, the elaborate ceiling … there is so much to see here!

Spread around in the rooms you also get to read quotes out of Victoria’s diary here and there.
Und es zeigt sich, dass dieses Haus hier am ehesten ein Zuhause für die Familie war.
And it becomes clear, that his house came closest to an actual „home“ for the family.

Und es zeigt sich, dass zwischen Victoria und Albert eine tiefe Liebe bestand.
And one also finds out that between Victoria and Albert, there existed a deep love.
Im „Haus“ – obwohl man eher von einem Palast sprechen möchte – darf man sehr viele Räume ansehen, in drei verschiedenen Stockwerken.
In the „house“ – though one would rather speak of a palace – you get to see lots of rooms, on three different floors.
Im Kinderzimmer hat es uns die Arche angetan.
In the children’s room the ark caught our interest.

Indien war ja eine der Kolonien des Königreichs. Und hier hat Victoria einen „indischen“ Raum einrichten lassen.
As you know, India was one of the kingdom’s colonies. And here, Victoria had an „Indian“ room set up.
Hier weiß man wirklich nicht, wo man zuerst hinschauen soll. Allein an dem Pfau unten wurde 500 Stunden gearbeitet!
Here you really don’t know where to look first. The work on that peacock below alone took 500 hours!
Nach all dem Prunk drinnen sehen wir uns jetzt das Haus von außen, von den „Terrassen“ aus an. Ja, es wirkt sehr italienisch. Und der Stil wurde dann wohl landesweit nachgeahmt.
After all the pomp inside, we now take a look at the building from the „terrace“. Yes, it all looks very Italian. And this style it seems was then copied all over the country.
Am 25. März 1845 schreibt Victoria an den König der Belgier über Osborne House: „Ein Ort für einen selbst, ruhig und abgelegen.“
On March 25, 1845 Victoria writes to the King of the Belgians: „A place of one’s own, quiet and retired.“
24.08.1848: „Mein Geburtstag wurde eingeläutet durch die wärmsten, zärtlichsten Glückwünsche von meinem Liebsten.“
24.08.1848: „My birthday was ushered in by the warmest, tenderest congratulation of my beloved one.“
Die Geburtstage von beiden wurden wann immer möglich in Osborne House gefeiert.
Whenever possible the birthdays of the couple were celebrated in Osborne House.
Nach Alberts frühem Tod 1861 hat die Königin ihren Geburtstag aber nie wieder hier gefeiert.
But after Albert’s early death 1861 the queen never again celebrated her birthdays here.
24.05.1861: „Der Tag begann mit der zärtlichen Liebe und Zuneigung dieses lieben Ehemannes, der mein ein und alles ist, dem Gott sicherlich noch viele Jahre schenken wird und länger als den er mich nicht wird leben lassen!“
24.05.1861: „The day opened with the tender love and affection of that dear Husband, who is my all in all, whom God will I am sure bless for years to come, and never let me survive!“
Hier seht Ihr übrigens das Eis-Haus, wo man sich im Sommer Eis – also gefrorenes Wasser – holen konnte. 1846 wurde es gebaut.
Here you see the ice house, by the way, where in the summertime you could get ice – i.e. frozen water. It was built 1846.
Und jetzt, von der italienischen Villa zum Schweizer Häuschen.
And now, from the Italian villa to the Swiss Cottage.
Das war Alberts Idee, in Erinnerung an seine eigene Kindheit. Die (neun) Kinder hatten hier ihren Bereich. Jeder auch seinen eigenen kleinen Garten.
That was Albert’s idea, remembering his own childhood. The (nine) children here had their own area. And each of them had his or her own little garden.
Hier die Schubkarren dazu. Albert hat zu marktüblichen Preisen das Gemüse von den Kindern gekauft.
Here the wheelbarrows to go with that. Albert would buy the vegetables from the kids, at market prices.
Hier gab es auch ein kleines Museum, mit allen möglichen Dingen, ausgestopften Tieren, Mineralien, einer Übersicht über die Verarbeitung von Baumwolle …
They also had a small museum here, with all kinds of things, stuffed animals, minerals, an overview of the handling of cotton …
Und draußen hatten die Kinder auch ihre Schlachtfelder.
And outside the children also had their battle grounds.
Wenn man dann noch ein Stück weiter geht, kommt man an den Strand. Hier hat die ganze Familie viel Zeit verbracht.
When you walk a bit further still, you get to the beach. Here the whole family spent a lot of time.
Das ist übrigens Victorias „Bademobil“, komplett mit eigener Toilette!
By the way, this is Victoria’s „bathing machine“, complete with her own toilet.

Wir sind mal wieder unterwegs! Leider nur für eine Woche, aber immerhin. Dieses Mal wollen wir uns eine – für uns – neue Ecke von England ansehen. Also haben wir uns in London Heathrow einen Mietwagen geschnappt und sind losgefahren. Nach ruhiger Fahrt auf den Motorways, damit man sich wieder an den Linksverkehr gewöhnen kann, sind wir Richtung Lyndhurst abgebogen. Und wir hatten Pferde (auch ein Fohlen) auf der Straße, Kühe, die direkt neben dem Asphalt lagen und auch Esel, wie man hier sieht.
We are traveling again! Unfortunately only for one week, but better than nothing. This time we want to look at a – for us – new corner of England. So we grabbed a rental car at London Heathrow and off we went. After a quiet ride on the motorways, to get used to the left hand traffice once again, we got off in the direction of Lyndhurst. And we had horses on the road (including a foal), cows lying right next to the tarmac and also donkeys as you can see here.
Das wird unser erstes großes Ziel sein in dieser Woche Urlaub: die Isle of Wight. (Hier seht Ihr die „Needles“ – da war wohl auch mal ein schlanker hoher Kalkfelsen, da wo jetzt eine Lücke ist. Der soll wohl für den Namen verantwortlich gewesen sein.)
This will be our first major destination in this one week vacation: the Isle of Wight. (Here you can see the „Needles“ – it seems there used to be a fourth slim high chalk rock, where there is a gap now. That appears to have given the rocks the name.)
Aber noch sind wir … naja, „auf dem Festland“ kann man ja wohl nicht sagen, in England sind wir ja auch auf einer großen Insel. Auf jeden Fall befinden wir uns auf dem „Hurst Spit“.
But so far we are … well, shall we say on the „mainland“? – after all, in England we are also simply on a big island. In any case, we are on the „Hurst Spit“.

… und dann die Salzwiesen. Eine sehr spannende Landschaft, durch die man da läuft.

Und läuft … und läuft … Der Weg scheint kein Ende zu nehmen, und auf dem groben Kies ist das Laufen auch durchaus anstrengend.
And walks … and walks … The path seems to never end, and on the large pebbles the walking is definitely exhausting.
Am Ende des Spits kommt man zum Hurst Castle, da wollen wir hin. Doch leider – in England ist auch ohne Brexit gerne mal Schlange stehen angesagt. Die Passkontrolle am Flughafen hatte uns eine Stunde gekostet, und bei Sixt haben wir sogar 1,5h verschwendet!
At the end of the Spit you reach Hurst Castle, our destination. But unfortunately – in England queuing is a frequent occurrence even without Brexit. The passport check at the airport cost us an hour, and at Sixt we even wasted 1.5h!
Also waren wir erst um kurz nach zwei überhaupt mit dem Auto am Parkplatz vom Hurst Spit angekommen. Und am Castle selber waren wir dann um drei.
So we did not reach the parking lot at the other end of Hurst Spit until shortly after two. And the Castle itself we finally reached at three.
Da wir für fünf die Fähre rüber zur Isle of White gebucht haben und man spätestens um halb fünf da sein muss, haben wir hier jetzt nur eine halbe Stunde Zeit bevor wir uns wieder auf den Weg zurück den Spit entlang machen müssen.
Since we booked the ferry to the Isle of White for five o’clock, and you have to be there at four thirty at the latest, we now only have half an hour’s time until we have to start walking back up the Spit.
Also, lasst uns schnell sein! Zwischen 1541 und 1544 wurde das ursprüngliche Hurst Castle unter Heinrich VIII. gebaut.
So, let’s be fast! Between 1541 and 1544 the original Hurst Castle was built, in the reign of Henry VIII.
1648 wurde Charles I. hier eine Weile gefangen gehalten, vom 1. bis zum 19. Dezember, um genau zu sein.
1648 Charles I was kept prisoner here for a bit, from December 1 to 19, to be exact.
Im Jahr 1700 wurde die Burg wieder als Gefängnis genutzt. Menschen, die den katholischen Glauben verbreiteten, sollten hier festgehalten werden. Aber es gab dann nur einen Gefangenen: Vater Paul Atkinson. Der war aber dafür 30 Jahre hier eingesperrt, bis er mit 74 Jahren starb.
In the year 1700 the castle was once again used as a prison. People who spread the catholic faith were meant to be kept here. But then in the end, there was only one prisoner: Father Paul Atkinson. But he was locked up here for 30 years, until he died at the age of 74.
Hier seht Ihr „38-Tonnen-Kanonen“. Im Jahr 1886 hatte Hurst Castle zehn von diesen Riesen. Noch im ersten Weltkrieg wurde dafür gesorgt, dass sie immer geladen waren.
Here you see 38 Ton Guns. By the year 1886 Hurst Castle had ten of these giants. And even in World War I care was always taken to keep them loaded at all times.
Über die Jahrhunderte wurde Hurst Castle von einem ursprünglich recht kompakten Gemäuer in eine langgestreckte Bastion umgebaut.
Over the centuries, Hurst Castle was changed from an originally rather compact structure to an elongated bastion.
Im Schnelldurchlauf sehen wir uns so viel an wie in einer halben Stunde möglich. Naja, hier brauchen wir nicht lange, denn da unten steht das Wasser und man kommt nicht weiter.
In a bit of a hurry we look at as much as we can in half an hour’s time. Oh well, here we don’t need long, because down there the floor is flooded, so we cannot go on.
Aber keine Sorge, wir waren gewarnt!

… aber aufs „Dach“ klettern, das lassen wir uns nicht nehmen! Auch wenn man sich ducken muss.
… but we definitely have the time to climb up to the „roof“! Even though we have to crouch down to do so.
Hier oben waren auch Kanonen platziert – nachdem man den Unterbau entsprechend verstärkt hatte. Die Dinger wurden ja immer größer und schwerer.
Up here as well, cannons used to be arranged – once the structure below had been fortified accordingly. After all, those things got ever bigger and heavier.
Auch in diese Richtung wurde die Bastion ausgebaut, wie man sehen kann. As you can see, in this direction the bastion was elongated as well.
Hier wieder ein Teil des ursprünglichen Castles, ebenerdig. Here you see a part of the original Castle structure, on the ground floor.
Und so sah die Burg noch 1640 aus. Klein und kompakt im Vergleich zur heutigen Struktur.

Wir würden durchaus gerne noch mehr Zeit hier verbringen … aber die Fähre ruft.

Also verlassen wir Hurst Castle und machen uns flinken Fußes zurück auf den Weg zum Auto.
So we leave Hurst Castle and with good speed walk back to the car.
Und wer sagts denn? Um 16:29 erreichen wir die Fähre!
And what do you know? At 4:29 pm we reach the ferry!
Und die ist auch spannend! Ihr seht den Mann mit der gelben Warnweste? Vor ihm, die weiße Metallwand, das ist eine Art Schubladen-Fahrstuhl. Die ersten Autos fahren auf die Fähre, dann wird die Wand hochgeklappt und der ganze Apparat wird ein Stockwerk nach oben gefahren, so dass darunter die nächste Runde Autos parken kann.
And it is very interesting! You see the man in the yellow reflective west? In front of him, that white metal wall, that is a kind of drawer-elevator. The first cars drive onto the ferry, then the wall gets folded up, and the whole apparatus is elevated up one floor, so that below, the next batch of cars can find space.
Auch hier erstrecken sich Salzwiesen, und die Route, die die Fähre nehmen muss, ist genau abgesteckt.

Unser letzter Tag in Lissabon … Also wollen wir heute in die Innenstadt und uns da noch ein paar Dinge ansehen. Montags ist es hoffentlich nicht so voll … Wir sind einfach mal zu Fuß losgelaufen, als erstes durch den Jardim da Estrela. Der wurde 1852 eröffnet.
Our last day in Lisbon … So today we want to go downtown and there look at a few things. On Mondays, we hope, it will not be so crowded … We simply started walking, and first strolled through the Jardim da Estrela. That was first opened in 1852.
Hier eine Büste, die den Schauspieler Taborda ehrt (1824-1909). Er feierte in Portugal und Brasilien spektakuläre Erfolge. In Lissabon gibt es ein Theater, das schon zu seinen Lebzeiten nach ihm benannt wurde. Und diese Bronze hier wurde 1914 von dem berühmten Bildhauer António Augusto da Costa Mota erstellt.
Here a bust that honours the actor Taborda (1824-1909). He celebrated great successes both in Portugal and in Brasil. In Lisbon there is a theater that during his lifetime already was named after him. And this bronze here was created 1914 by the famous sculptor António Augusto da Costa Mota.
Der Park war sehr sauber, vor allem musste man nicht aufpassen, dass man nicht ungewollt in etwas tritt, was man nicht am Schuh haben möchte … Achtung Hundebesitzer, so manches kann hier teuer werden!
The park was very clean, you especially did not have to be careful about maybe stepping into something that you do not want to have on your shoes … Attention dog owners, here a few things might get costly!
Auf dem Schild kann man ganz oben schon sehen, dass der Weg zu einer Kirche führt. Die Basílica da Estrela haben wir auf diese Weise ganz zufällig entdeckt. – Und das war eine tolle Entdeckung!
On the sign right at the top you can already see that the path leads to a church. The Basílica da Estrela we discovered totally by chance this way. – And it was a great discovery!
Die Kirchendecke ist zum Beispiel sehr sehenswert. Es wirkt alles sehr freundlich und einladend. Der Marmor in drei verschiedenen Farben hat uns sehr gut gefallen.
The ceiling of the church is very much worth seeing, for example. Everything seems very friendly and inviting. The marble in three different colours we really liked.
Ja, und dann kann man einen der Türme hochsteigen. (Hier seht Ihr zum Beispiel einen der üblichen Touristen, die sich über die Wendeltreppe freuen …)
Yes, and then you can climb up one of the towers. (Here for example, you see one of the usual tourists who are oh so happy about the spiral staircase …)
Und dann geht man oben durch eine Tür und … Überraschung!!! … steht auf dem Dach! Wir sind überall rumgelaufen (weiter unten seht Ihr eine von den Touristinnen … überall müssen die sich fotografieren lassen!).
And then at the top you walk through a door and … surprise!!! … all of a sudden are standing on the roof! We walked all around (further below you see one of the tourist gals … everywhere they need to have their picture taken!).
Und warum hier überhaupt eine Kirche steht: Maria I. und Peter III. gelobten, dass sie eine Kirche bauen würden, wenn sie einen Sohn bekämen. 1761 wurde ihnen dann der ersehnte Thronfolger geboren: Joseph.
And in case you are wondering why this church has been built: Maria I and Peter III vowed that they would have on erected if they were blessed with a son. 1761 then the longed for heir was born: Joseph.
1777 wurde der Bau der Kirche in Auftrag gegeben, und 1790 war sie auch schon fertig.
In 1777 the order was given to build the church, and in 1790 it was already finished.
Leider war Joseph da schon gestorben: 1788 an den Pocken!
Unfortunately by then Joseph had already died: 1788 of the pox!
Wie gesagt, wir haben das Dach bis in die letzte Ecke ausgekundschaftet … und auf dem ersten „Dachbild“ weiter oben seht Ihr in der Mitte der Kuppel eine kleine dunkle Tür. Und da kommt man dann auf die Galerie des Kuppelraumes. Toll!
As I said, we explored every corner of that roof … and on the first picture of the roof earlier, you can see a little dark door in the middle of the cupola. And there you can go in and get to the gallery inside the dome. Fantastic!
Hier kann man komplett herumgehen und nach unten in die Kirche blicken. Ein ungewöhnlicher Blickwinkel!
Here you can walk once all around and look down into the church. A very unusual perspective!
So, weiter auf unserem Weg in die Innenstadt. Wir haben sehr bewusst die Straße gewählt, die wir auch auf unserem Weg zu Rob und Jen genommen hatten. Denn da war ein Laden, den wir uns genauer ansehen wollten:

Okay, on we go, up and down the narrow streets of Lisbon. Every once in a while you pass a tram – we will have to ride on one as well, a must for every tourist, as the travel guides insist.
Der nächste Zwischenstop war für uns ein alter Buchladen, gegründet 1732.
The next stopover for us was an old book shop, founded 1732.
Der Laden wurde in das Guinness Book of Records als der älteste Buchladen der Welt, der noch in Betrieb ist, aufgenommen. Und hier seht Ihr eine Liste der Dinge, die der Laden „erlebt“ hat:

Glücklicherweise verstehen wir kein Portugiesisch … sonst wären wir wieder mit einer Armladung voller Bücher nach Hause gegangen. Wobei … das eine Drachen-Kinderbuch hätte mich auch so gereizt …
Luckily we do not understand Portuguese … otherwise we most likely would have ended up going home with an armload of books. Even so … I found that this one children’s dragon book was tempting …
Naja, weiter gehts! Zu einer sehr berühmten und außergewöhnlichen Sehenswürdigkeit von Lissabon, die mal einfach normaler Teil des öffentlichen Nahverkehrs war. Der Elevador de Santa Justa ist ein Fahrstuhl, der einem den Aufstieg auf einen der steilsten Hügel in Lissabon erspart.
Oh well, on again! To a very famous and exceptional sight here in Lisbon, which used to be simply a normal part of the public transit system. The Elevador de Santa Justa is an elevator that saves you the ascent of one of the steepest hills of Lisbon.
Eröffnet wurde er 1902, und man fährt mit ihm 45m nach oben oder unten.
It was first opened in 1902, and with it, you go up or down for 45m.
Ursprünglich wurde er mit einer Dampfmaschine angetrieben. Das Design stammt von Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, der bei Gustave Eiffel gelernt hatte.
Originally it was powered by a steam engine. The design originates with Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, who was one of Gustave Eiffel’s students.
Hier hat man nicht nur einen tollen Ausblick auf die Stadt, auch die Konstruktion selber ist durchaus sehenswert.
Here you don’t only get a spectacular view across the city, the structure itself is also well worth seeing.
Aber der Rundumblick ist toll, keine Frage.

So, unser dritter Tag in Lissabon. Es ist zwar Sonntag, also wird überall viel los sein, aber da wir nur ein paar Tage hier sind, kann man da nichts machen … Wir sind also mit der U-Bahn los und an der Station Campo Grande ausgestiegen. Wo es diese tollen Fliesenbilder gab.
So, our third day in Lisbon, Now, it is Sunday, so there will be lots of people everywhere, but since we only came for a few days, that can’t be helped … So we took the subway and got back out at Campo Grande station. Where you can see these great pictures on tiles.
Und dann sind wir zu einem Garten, über den wir im Internet gelesen hatten: Jardim Bordallo Pinheiro.
And then we walked to a garden about which we had read on the internet: Jardim Bordallo Pinheiro.
Diesen Garten zeichnen riesige Porzellantiere aus, die der Künstler Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846 – 1905) kreiert hatte. Übrigens erhielt er 1889 bei der Weltausstellung in Paris, wo er die Verantwortung für den portugiesischen Beitrag trug, vom französischen Präsidenten die Goldmedaille für den besten Messepavillon.
This garden is special because of giant porcelain animals which the artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro (1846 – 1905) had created. By the way, in 1889 at the international exhibition in Paris, in which he took on the responsibility for the Portuguese representation, he was presented, by the French president, with the gold medal for the best pavilion of the fair.

Überall gab es Figuren zu entdecken, an den Mauern, hinter Hecken oder auch oben in den Bäumen …

Das Ding war fast so groß wie ich!!! – Dieser Garten ist nur ein kleiner Teil einer größeren Anlage, und da gab es auch lebende Tiere zu sehen.
This thing was almost as big as me!!! – This garden is only a small part of a larger complex, and there were also living animals to see.
Etliche weiße Pfauen gab es da. Und auch eine Menge im gewohnten Federkleid.
Quite a few white peacocks they had there. And also many in the more well known colours.
Zwischen den Gärten gab es auch zwei Gebäude. Wir sind erst in das mit einer Sonderausstellung: Arquitetura de um Livro – Architektur eines Buches.
Between the gardens there were also two buildings. First we went into the one with the special exhibition: Arquitetura de um Livro – Architecture of a Book.
Die befreundeten Fotografen Victor Palla und Costa Martins sind in den 1950ern durch Lissabons Straßen gelaufen und haben das tägliche Leben fotografiert. Daraus haben sie dann ein Buch gemacht, ein „graphisches Gedicht“, wie sie es nannten.
The photographers Victor Palla and Costa Martins, who were friends, walked the streets of Lisbon in the 1950s and took pictures of ordinary everyday life, and out of that they made a book, a „graphic poem“ as they called it.
In der Ausstellung konnte man die schwarz-weißen Bilder sehen, die alle möglichen Momente einfangen … aus dem Handzettel, den wir dort gekriegt haben: „Wir sehen das historische Zentrum einer Stadt, die noch nicht international ist, aber voller echter und ausdrucksstarker Menschen, die die Liebe und Zuneigung der Fotografen zu ihrer Stadt Lissabon teilen.“
In the exhibition you could see the black and white photographs, which capture all kinds of moments … out of the flyer we got there: „We see the historic centre of a city that is not yet cosmopolitan, but full of genuine and expressive people who share the photographer’s love and affection for their city of Lisbon.“
Man erfuhr aber auch viel über die Auswahl der Fotos und Ausschnitte, über den ganzen Prozess bis das Layout stand.
But you also learned a lot about the selection of the pictures and details, of the whole process of getting the layout right.
Und dann war das Buch fertig, 1959 war die erste Veröffentlichung von „Lisboa ‚cidade triste e alegre'“ (Lissabon, traurige und fröhliche Stadt).
And then the book was finished, 1959 it was first released, with the title „Lisboa ‚cidade triste e alegre'“ (Lisbon, sad and happy city).
Als nächstes sind wir in das Hauptgebäude und die dort stattfindenen Ausstellungen. Im ersten Raum gab es aktuell eine über Jorge Colaço, bekannt für seine Fliesenmalereien. Er hat aber auch Karikaturen gemacht.
Next we went into the main building and looked at the exhibitions there. In the first room currently there was one about Jorge Colaço, known for his tile paintings. But he also did caricatures.
Und dann ging es zur ständigen Ausstellung über die Geschichte von Lissabon. Hier ein Modell der Zisterne des Palácio Marialva.
And then we went to the permanent exhibition about the history of Lisbon. Here a model of the cistern of the Palácio Marialva.
Und dann haben wir viele alte Karten und Drucke gesehen, viele davon befassen sich mit dem großen Erdbeben, das am 1. November 1755 die Stadt verwüstete.
And then we saw many old maps and prints, many of them addressing the major earthquake that destroyed the city on November 1, 1755.

Auf diesem Bild seht Ihr den Zustand der Igreja de S. Nicolau nach dem Beben.

Das Erdbeben muss die Hölle gewesen sein. Was nicht durch das Beben einstürzte oder dem folgenden Großbrand zum Opfer fiel, wurde Beute des Tsunamis, der vom Beben ausgelöst wurde. Zehntausende Menschen sind in dieser Katastrophe umgekommen.
The earthquake must have been pure hell. What did collapse due to the quake or fall victim to the ensuing major fire, fell prey to the tsunami that was caused by the quake. Ten thousands of people died in this terrible catastrophe.
Bilder, die nichts mit dem Beben zu tun hatten, waren deshalb aber auch nicht unbedingt erhebender: Hier die Hinrichtung der Távora-Familie nach einem Anschlag auf König Joseph I., der dieser Adelsfamilie zur Last gelegt wurde.
But pictures that had nothing to do with the earthquake were not nicer to look at for all that: Here you see the execution of the Távora family after an assassination attempt at King Joseph I., which this aristocratic family was charged with.

Natürlich sind wir fündig geworden. Leckere Limonade gab es da! (nach uns war keine mehr da …) Torben hatte das „coffee steak“, sehr interessant und schmackhaft, und zum Nachtisch gab es eine Menge frische Ananas.
Of course we found something. Tasty lemonade they had there! (after we were done, there was none left …) Torben had the „coffee steak“, very interesting and tasty, and for dessert we had a lot of fresh pineapple.
Und während wir da saßen und schmausten haben wir an der Straße eine Haltestelle der Straßenbahn beobachtet. Da gab es endlose Schlangen … aber nur bei einer Linie: der 28.
And while we sat there and feasted, we observed a tram stop on the street. There were endless queues there … but just for one of the tram lines: the 28
Die wird in jedem Reiseführer angepriesen, also stehen die Touristen Schlange. Dabei gibt es jede Menge anderer Linien, die auch an den Sehenswürdigkeiten vorbeifahren – nur nicht an allen hintereinander.
That is mentioned in every travel guide, so the tourists stand in line for ages. Even though there are lots of other lines which will also pass the main sights – just not all in a row.
Wir sind also mit einer „normalen“ Straßenbahn den Hügel hoch. Die Haltestelle, die wir wollten, haben wir leider „verpasst“: wir sind nicht schnell genug aus der überfüllten alten Bahn gekommen. Aber der Blick hier war ja durchaus auch schön.
So we took one of the „normal“ trams up the hill. The stop that we had wanted to take we kind of „missed“: we did not manage to get out of the crowded old wagon in time. But the view here was not to be sniffed at either.

Wobei .. „noch“? Beim Erdbeben von 1755 wurde die Burg in großen Teilen zerstört und erst in den 1940er Jahren wieder aufgebaut.
Though .. „still standing“? During that earthquake 1755 a lot of the castle was destroyed and only restored in the 1940s.
Dieser Tage werden archäologische Arbeiten durchgeführt, bei denen noch mehr altes Gemäuer zu Tage kommt. Wir hätten uns das gerne genauer angesehen, aber wir haben die Führung leider gerade verpasst.
These days archaeological digs are taking place that unearth even more old walls and things. We would have liked to take a closer look at that, but we had just missed the next guided tour, unfortunately.
Auf jeden Fall ist die Burg sehenswert!

Wir haben uns dann wieder auf den Weg gemacht.
We then got going once again.
Da wir hundemüde waren, wussten wir auch genau, wie wir zurück ins Hotel wollten: mit der Straßenbahn 25. Die Haltestelle haben wir auch gefunden … aber: am Sonntag fährt die 25 nicht!
Since we were dead tired, we knew exactly how to get back to the hotel: with the tram 25. And we did find the stop for it … but: on Sundays the 25 does not run!

Das war heute unser Ziel: Bethlehem, auf Portugiesisch „Belém“. Das ist ein Ort, der sich für Ausflüge anbietet, hier gibt es eine riesige Menge an Sehenswürdigkeiten auf engem Raum zu sehen.
That is where we were headed today: Bethlehem, in Portuguese „Belém“. That is a location that is perfect for an excursion, because here a very large number of sights can be visited in a rather small area.
Aber erst hatten wir Probleme, so weit zu kommen. Wir haben die U-Bahn genommen, und am Praça Marquês de Pombal mussten wir umsteigen. Bis zur nächsten Bahn war eine Viertelstunde Zeit, also sind wir an die Oberfläche. Da haben wir diese Säule gesehen.
But first we had problems getting that far. We had taken the subway and at Praça Marquês de Pombal we had to switch trains. But until the next one would come, there was a quarter of an hour’s time, so we went above ground. There we saw this column.
Die wurde 1917-1934 gebaut und ist Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo gewidmet, dem ersten Marquis von Pombal, der Portugal 1750-1777 als Premierminister regierte.

Und dann sind wir wieder runter zur U-Bahn. Erinnert Ihr Euch noch an die tollen Haltestellen in Stockholm? Hier gibt es auch schöne Stops.
And then we went back down to the subway. Do you remember the spectacular stations in Stockholm? Here there are also very nice stops.
Endlich: Belém. Die erste Sehenswürdigkeit: Das Hieronymuskloster.
Finally: Belèm. The first sight to see: Jerónimos Monastery.
Schon von außen ein sehr, sehr beeindruckender Bau!
From the outside already, a very, very impressive building!
Diese ganzen feinen Details, atemberaubend! Der Bau ist im Stil der Manuelinik (portugiesische Spätgotik) gehalten. 1501 hatte König Manuel I. den Grundstein für das Kloster gelegt.
All these delicate little details, breathtaking! The structure is built in the Manueline (Portuguese late Gothic) style. 1501 King Manuel I. lay the first stone of foundation.
Wir hätten uns das Gebäude auch gerne von innen angesehen, aber die Schlange war uns einfach zu lang. (Merke für den nächsten Besuch: Am besten ganz früh da sein!)
We would also have liked to see the building from the inside, but the queue was just too long for our linking. (Remember for the next visit: Best be here very, very early!)
Aber es gibt hier ja auch noch mehr zu sehen. Also gingen wir die paar Meter zum Padrao dos Descobrimentos, dem „Denkmal der Entdeckungen“.
But then there is more to see here after all. So we walked the few meters to the Padrao dos Descobrimentos, the „Monument of Discoveries“
Es wurde 1960 unter der Herrschaft von António de Oliveira Salazar errichtet, zum 500. Todestag von Heinrich dem Seefahrer. Auf der westlichen Seite sind viele Entdecker dargestellt, während die östliche Seite die wichtigsten Financiers zeigt.
It was erected in 1960 under the reign of António de Oliveira Salazar, on the occasion of the 500. anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. On the Western side many explorers are represented, while the Eastern side shows the most important financiers.
Hier am Wasser hat man auch einen schönen Blick auf die Brücke Ponte 25 de Abril. 1966 wurde sie als Salazar-Brücke eröffnet, doch nach der Nelkenrevolution 1974 wurde sie umbenannt.
Here at the water you also have a great view of the bridge Ponte 25 de Abril. That was first opened as Salazar brige in 1966, but after the Carnation Revolution in 1974 it was renamed.
Aber zurück zum Denkmal: Das ist über 50m hoch und man darf da hochsteigen! Hier kann man Heinrich dem Seefahrer auf den Kopf gucken.
But back to the monument: It is over 50m high and people are allowed to climb it up! Here you can look down onto Henry the Navigator’s head.
Auch das Kloster sieht man natürlich sehr schön von hier.
And from here, of course you also have a nice view of the monastery.
Ein weiteres Schmuckstück, das erst von hier oben so richtig zur Geltung kommt, ist der Boden vor dem Monument.
Another gem that you don’t get a really good impression of until you look down at it from up here, is the ground in front of the monument.
Und wenn man Richtung Atlantik blickt, sieht man den Torre de Belém, unser nächstes Ziel.
And when you gaze in the direction of the Atlantic, you see the Torre de Belém, our next destination.
Doch auf dem Weg zum Ausgang haben wir entdeckt, dass es im Keller des Denkmals auch noch etwas zu sehen gab. Wir hatten das Glück, zu genau der richtigen Zeit da zu sein. Fotos von Luís Pavão waren zu sehen, die er gemacht hatte, während das Monument 2016 gereinigt und restauriert worden war.
But on our way back to the entrance, we discovered that in the cellar of the monument, there was something else to be seen. We were lucky to come to Lisbon at the right point in time. There you could see photos taken by Luís Pavão, which he had taken when in 2016 the monument had been cleaned and restored.
Auf diese Weise kriegt man ein sehr gutes Gefühl für die Größe der Statuen. Jede der 32 Figuren ist über sieben Meter hoch!
This way you get a very good sense of the size of the statues. Every one of the 32 statues is over seven meters tall!
Und dann hatten wir Hunger!

Frisch gestärkt ging es dann weiter. Vorbei an diesen Plakaten, auf denen ich nur das ursprüngliche Datum sah. Torben hat genauer hingesehen und entdeckt, dass die Ausstellung verlängert worden war. – Vielleicht schaffen wir die später noch?
After this refreshment we went on. We passed by these posters, on which I only noticed the original date. Torben luckily took a closer look and realized that the exhibition had been extended. – Maybe we will manage to take a look later on?
Jetzt wollten wir ja erst einmal zum Torre de Belém. Dabei sind wir an diesem alten Kran vorbeigekommen.
Now we first wanted to get to the Torre de Belém. In walking there, we passed this old crane here.

It was used to lift hydroplanes for repair.
Und 1922 haben sich zwei Männer von hier auf den Weg gemacht, um nach Rio de Janeiro zu fliegen. Dafür waren sie damals vom 30. März bis 15. Juni unterwegs!
And in 1922 two men left from here to fly all the way to Rio de Janeiro. For that trip they were traveling from March 30 to June 15 back then!

Na also, gefunden! Danach bin ich zurück zu Torben … aber der stand immer noch an derselben Stelle!!!

Eine Station hatten wir aber noch. Wie die Dame im Hotel morgens hörte, dass wir uns Belém anschauen wollen, hat sie uns genau gesagt, wo wir die berühmten „Pastéis de Belém“ kaufen müssen. Das sind Törtchen mit Vanillepudding.
One last stop we had though. When in the morning the lady at the hotel heard that we wanted to go to Belém, she told us exactly where to go to buy the famous „Pastéis de Belém“, a must! It is a pastry filled with vanilla pudding.

Wir hatten ein süßes kleines Apartment über zwei Stockwerke. Unten Wohn/Esszimmer, Küchenecke und kleines Bad, oben unterm Dach das Schlafzimmer.
We had a cute little apartment that went over two storeys. Lower level was eating/dining area, the little cooking corner and a small bath, upper level under the roof the bedroom.
Und wenn wir wieder nach Lissabon reisen sollten, werden wir garantiert versuchen, wieder genau dort unterzukommen. Das Hotel war putzig und ruhig, in Gehdistanz zur Innenstadt, und die Leute dort waren einfach supernett. Wir haben uns sehr, sehr wohl gefühlt!!!
And if we should ever travel to Lisbon again, we will most definitely try to get a room there again. The hotel was cute and quiet, in walking distance to downtown and the people there were incredibly sweet. We really felt very much at home there!!!
Wir sind dann nach einer Stunde losgezogen und haben die ersten Eindrücke von Lissabon gesammelt. Hier ein Denkmal für den Entdecker Pedro Alvares Cabral. Diese Kopie war 1940 ein Geschenk der brasilianischen Regierung. Das Original steht in Rio de Janeiro.
We then left after about an hour and collected our first few impressions of Lisbon. Here a monument celebrating the explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral. This copy was a gift from the Brazilian government, in 1940. The original is located in Rio de Janeiro.
In Lissabon gibt es viele enge, verwinkelte Straßen, und es geht immer auf und ab und auf und ab … Kein Pflaster für hochhackige Schuhe!
In Lisbon you find many narrow, labyrinthine streets, and it’s alway up and down and up and down … No place for wearing high heels!
Nicht weit weg war der Palácio de São Bento, ein ehemaliges Benediktiner-Kloster, heute Sitz des Parlaments.
Not much further we came across the Palácio de São Bento, which used to be a Benedictine monastery, today it houses the parliament.
Und es wird geschützt von bekifften Löwen …
And it is protected by totally stoned lions …
Wir wollten jetzt auch was trinken gehen … aber nicht alleine. Wir waren ja nicht nur einfach so in Lissabon, sondern … um gute Freunde zu treffen.
We also wanted to go for a drink now … but not on our own. After all we had not just come to Lison on a whim … but to meet some good friends.

Those of you who have been reading our travel blog for a long time already, might remember: Rob and Jen from Canada, whom we had first met on Hawaii.
Die beiden waren mit ihren Freunden David und Margret unterwegs. Wir sind schön essen gegangen und hatten einen wunderschönen Abend zusammen.
Those two were traveling with their friends David and Margret. Together we went out for a nice dinner and spent a wonderful evening.
Danach sind wir durch die abendlichen Straßen wieder heim gelaufen.
Afterwards we walked back home through the night-time streets.

Und jetzt mal wieder ein kleiner Ausflug innerhalb Deutschlands. Nämlich nach Bayern, genauer gesagt nach Plattling im Bayerischen Wald. Die Anreise war sehr stressig. Der eine oder andere mag sich erinnern, dass es am 28.7.2018 am Flughafen München eine Sicherheitspanne gab. Wir waren extra ganz früh aufgestanden und wollten um neun Uhr fliegen, doch der Flug wurde gestrichen. Stattdessen durften wir erst um 16:30 fliegen. Eigentlich … Wirklich losgekommen sind wir um 17:40. Wir sind in München zum Schalter der Autovermietung gerast und sind dann mit dem Wagen auf die Autobahn gedüst. In Rekordzeit hab ich uns nach Plattling gefahren, und wir haben es doch tatsächlich noch geschafft! Denn wir waren für die Nibelungentage da, und am Abend um neun ging die Vorstellung los.
And now once again a little excursion inside of Germany. Meaning, to Bavaria, more exactly to Plattling in the Bavarian Forest. The trip there was very stressful. Some of you might remember that on July 28, 2018 there had been a security mishap at the Munich airport. We had gotten up nice and early and wanted to take a flight at nine, but that one got cancelled. Instead we got put on a flight at 4:30 p.m. Supposedly … It was 5:40 p.m. when we finally did get going. In Munich we raced to the counter of the rental car company, and then rushed onto the autobahn with the car we got. I got us to Plattling in record time, and we actually made it in time! Because we went there for the Nibelungen festival, and the performance started at nine in the evening.
Alle vier Jahre wird hier die Nibelungensaga auf die Bühne gebracht. Beim letzten Mal waren wir auch schon da, damals war es etwas klassischer mit dem Augenmerk auf der Schauspielerei. Der Regisseur dieses Mal hat sich mehr auf wilde Lichteffekte und ähnliches konzentriert. Leider gingen dabei die Geschichte und das Spiel ziemlich unter …
Every four years the Nibelungen Saga is performed on stage here. [if you want to learn about this old German tale, look up „Nibelungenlied“] The last time we had also been here, back then it had been a bit more of a classic play with the focus on actual acting. The director this time put more attention to wild lighting effects and other things of the kind. Unfortunately in all that the story and the acting got lost quite a bit …
Einen Großteil der Schauspieler kannten wir schon vom letzten Mal. Und mit „kennen“ meine ich nicht nur, „die hatten wir schon mal gesehen“.
Quite a few of the actors we already knew from last time. And with „we knew“ I do not just mean „we had seen them before“.
Meine Großtante schneidert nämlich seit Jahrzehnten die tollsten Kleider für die Nibelungentage. Gürtel mit tausenden von Perlchen und solche Sachen, unglaublich!
Because my great aunt has been sewing the most spectacular outfits for the Nibelungen festival. Belts with thousands of little pearls and the like, incredible!
Daher kennt die ganze Stadt Tante Irmengard, und damit waren wir als ihre Familie auch gleich bekannt.
Because of that, the whole town knows Aunt Irmengard, and thus we as her family also became known right away.
Und wie! Beim letzten Mal, als wir da waren, hatte ich kein passendes Kleid, also hat Tantchen kurzerhand das Kleid, das sie normalerweise zu den Festlichkeiten getragen hat, für mich ein bisschen verlängert, schwupps war ich eingekleidet.
Did we ever! Last time we had been there, I did not have a suitable dress, so my aunt simply took the dress that she normally wore for the festivities, added a bit of length for me, and tadaa, I was dressed up appropriately.
Aber als ich so durch die Stadt gelaufen bin (Tante Irmengard gerade nicht in der Nähe), da hat mich jeder zweite angehalten und sehr misstrauisch festgestellt: Aber das ist doch das Kleid von …!!!
But when then I walked through town like that (Aunt Irmengard not being in the vicinity right then), every second person stopped me and very skeptically stated: But that is the dress of …!!!
Aber zurück zur Aufführung. Wie Ihr seht, gabs da auch mal etwas Akrobatik zu sehen.
But back to the performance. As you can see, at times there was also some acrobatics to watch.
Aber dann gings zurück zu bunten Lichtern …
But then it was back to colourful lights …
… und Nebel.
… and fog.
Irgendwann war das zu Ende, und am nächsten Tag sind wir dann auf den Mittelaltermarkt. – Schick, oder? Torben kennt Ihr ja, und dann sind links meine Mutter und rechts meine Tante (aber nicht Tante Irmengard!).
At some point all that was over, and the next day we went to the medieval market. – Pretty, don’t you think? You know Torben, and then on the left you see my Mum and on the right my aunt (but not Aunt Irmengard!).
Seht Ihr? So gut bekannt sind wir mit der Truppe … „Gunther“ hat uns sogar seine Unterwäsche gezeigt. Sehr kleidsam, fanden wir.
You see? This is how well we know the troupe … „Gunther“ even showed us his underwear. Very becoming, we thought.
