Wollen wir doch mal sehen, was diese Höhle zu bieten hat!

Durch die Höhle führt ein Weg mit Geländern. Man muss vorab einen bestimmten Zeitraum buchen, in dem man in die Höhle geht, dann darf man alleine den Weg entlang wandern.

A path with railings leads through the cavern. You have to book a specific time slot ahead of time, then you can enter the cavern at the booked time, and can walk the path on your own.

Was sehr schön ist: nur hier und da ist sehr dezent beleuchtet.

Very nice: there is only decent lighting at selected spots.

Denn im Dunklen leben jede Menge Tiere, zum Beispiel das Katzenfrett, beschrieben als: „Das süßeste Säugetier, das Sie nie gesehen haben!“

For in the dark a lot of animals live, among them ringtail cats, described as: “The cutest mammals you’ve never seen!”

Naja, auch den Boden hat man zum Teil nicht gesehen, aber es war ja alles eben und es gab die Geländer … 😊

The ground you sometimes did not see either, but then it was all smooth and there were the railings … 😊

Aber wer wollte hier auch auf den Boden schauen?

But then, who would want to look at the ground here?

Hier und da gibt es auch spannende Farben zu sehen.

Here and there you can also spot interesting colours.

Und da hinten gibt es Salzstangen?

Die Höhle ist riesig! Man geht tiefer und tiefer in den Berg, und engere Passagen sind wirklich die Ausnahme.

The cavern is huge! You walk deeper and deeper into the mountain and narrow passages are really the exception.

Hier sieht man “schräge” Stalaktiten, denn der große Fels, an dem sie hängen, ist vor langer Zeit abgestürzt.

Here you see slanted stalactites, because the huge rock on which they hang, crashed down a long time ago.

Es gab so viel zu sehen!

There was so much to see!

Offiziell ist angegeben, dass man 1,5 Stunden braucht, wenn man die gesamte Tour macht.

They tell you in their information that you need 1.5 hours when you do the complete tour.

Wir waren über drei Stunden in der Höhle …

We were in the cavern for over three hours …

Und wie wir dann am Ende beim Fahrstuhl waren,

Wir sind dann weiter zum Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Was für eine Kulisse!

Wir haben eine Menge schöne Pflanzen gesehen.

Heute haben wir die UFO-Stadt wieder verlassen. – Und wir sind nicht bei denen hier mitgefahren.

Wir fahren aber trotzdem! – Und nach einer Weile konnten wir vom Highway schon sehen, wo wir hin wollen: der weiße Streifen in der Ferne.

Well, so to say! Because that here is gypsum!

All diese Dünen gehören zu den seltensten Landschaften auf der Erde. Nur eine Handvoll von Gips-Dünen existieren. – Und dies ist das größte solche Dünensystem! Astronauten können diese Dünen vom All aus sehen!

This dunefield is one of the rarest landscaped on Earth. Only a tiny handful of gypsum dune systems exist. – And this one is the largest! Astronauts can see these dunes clearly from space!

Es gibt hier auch ein paar Tierchen, aber tagsüber sieht man nur ihre Spuren.

There are some animals that live here, but during the day you only spot their tracks.

Da die Dünen stets wandern, müssen Pflanzen schnell wachsen.

Since the dunes are constantly shifting, plants must grow fast.

Wir machen uns jetzt auf nach Roswell. Auf jeden Fall die richtige Richtung, der Gegenverkehr war in 10 Meilen Stau gefangen.

Später war dann sehr wenig Verkehr, dafür gab es eine Schießerei!

Es soll auch Schriftzeichen gegeben haben …

It is said that there was writing of some kind …

Seltsame Materialien sollen gefunden worden sein, und fremde Wesen wurden gesichtet.

Strange materials were supposedly found, and alien beings were seen.

Diese Dame hier hat angeblich die Außerirdischen gesehen und später Selbstmord begangen (ihre Familie glaubt an einen Mord).

This lady here supposedly saw the aliens and later committed suicide (her family believes she was murdered).

Aber es war ja nur ein Wetterballon…

But then, it had only been a weather balloon …

Natürlich ist das der perfekte Stoff für Film und Fernsehen.

Naturally this is wonderful material for movies and tv.

Das Museum ist toll. Man erfährt so viel, über Außerirdische im Altertum, über Kunst, über militärische Raketen, über die verschiedenen Arten von „Kontakt“ …

The museum is great. You learn so much, about aliens in ancient times, about art, about military rockets, about the different kinds of “contact” …

Und dann eine tolle Installation: Wir sind Außerirdische in einem UFO und stellen fest, irgendwo im All spielt jemand mit Atomkraft herum!

And then a great installation: We are aliens in a UFO and detect that somewhere in space somebody is tinkering with nuclear power!

Wir wollen das untersuchen … aber dann stürzen wir auf dem fremden Planeten ab!

We want to investigate that … but then we crash on the foreign planet!

Wir sind dann noch ein wenig den Spuren der Außerirdischen gefolgt.

We then followed the tracks of the aliens for a bit longer.

Hm, wer war das wohl?

Denn sie sind überall!

Because they are everywhere!

Ist denn noch niemand aufgefallen, dass Hamburger wie UFOs aussehen???

Did nobody ever notice that hamburgers have the shape of UFOs???

So, wir hatten ein Nickerchen, es ist kurz nach drei und kann weitergehen. Es ist wieder sehr warm und sonnig, und auch dafür sind wir gewappnet.

Um vier hätte es die „Great American Kite Show“ geben sollen, aber die angekündigten großen Drachen hätten wohl mehr Wind gebraucht … also ganz mit der Ruhe.

At four the „Great American Kite Show” should have taken place, but the large kites that had been announced would have needed more wind, it seems … so we take it easy.

Viele Leute hatten eigene Drachen mitgebracht.

Many people had brought their own kites.

Ganz klar mein Favorit!

Zwischendrin wieder Formationsflug.

In between again some flying in formation.

Was die wohl über die ganzen Nachbarn in der Luft denken?

I wonder what they think about all those neighbours in the air?

Vielleicht: Ach schau mal, die haben ihr Nest gleich dabei, wie praktisch!

Maybe: Hey, look, they bring their nests right along, how practical!

Bei Luftfahrt darf Raumfahrt nicht fehlen.

When you have aeronautics, space business is not far.

Und dann gab es wieder Programm: Team „Fastrax“ ist hoch über uns abgesprungen.

And then back to the official program: Team “Fastrax” jumped high above us.

Die sechs hatten fünf Flaggen und ähnliches dabei.

Those six had five flags and similar stuff with them.

Ach ja … das hätte auch Spaß gemacht!

Oh well … that would have been fun as well!

Der nächste Programmpunkt war für sechs angesetzt, aber der Sprecher meinte schon, da wird es wohl acht werden. Hier wird der erste von 17 Gasballons aufgefüllt.

The next item on the agenda had been scheduled for six, but the announcer did tell us, it might rather be around eight. Here the first of 17 gas balloons is getting inflated.

Ich hab ja noch nicht alle Drachen gesehen … 😊

But then I have not seen all the kites yet … 😊

Außerdem gibt es auch noch Leute, die mit Kettensägen Figuren erstellen. Heute vormittag wurde der erste Schwung versteigert.

Furthermore there are also people who create figurines with their chainsaws. This morning they had auctioned off the first batch.

Da waren durchaus auch sehr schöne Sachen dabei.

There were definitely very nice pieces to be seen.

Naja, dann gehen wir zurück zu den Drachen.

Okay, then we go back to the kites.

Bei den Gasballons sind jetzt schon mehrere zu sehen.

Of the gas balloons you can see a few more now.

Übrigens: natürlich gab es eine Menge Leute, die dafür sorgten, dass alles funktioniert. Und bei den „Ballonbetreuern“ war wohl das Motto: Wir kommen alle schwarz-weiß gestreift, wie Schiedsrichter.

By the way: of course there were a lot of people around taking care of things. And for the “balloon minders” I guess the motto was: We will all wear black and white stripes, like referees.

Neben den Gasballons wurden jetzt auch Heißluftballons wieder gefüllt.

Denn allmählich wird es dunkel.

For it does get dark now bit by bit.

Und da zeigen viele Ballons nochmal ihre Farben. Auf Kommando feuern alle gleichzeitig oder aber sie „funkeln“ abwechselnd.

And that is when many balloons once again show their colours. At a prompt they all start their burners at the same time or they take turns “twinkling”.

Und die hier werden immer mehr.

And these here are getting more numerous.

Aber weil die so lange brauchten, war das ganze Programm nicht zu halten, denn die Fallschirmspringer hätten nach den Gasballons nochmal springen sollen. Die kamen jetzt zwischendrin, und es war schon Nacht. Da hat man die beleuchteten Anzüge gut gesehen … aber die Kamera tat sich schwer.

But since they were running so late, the whole program was in turmoil, because the parachuters had been scheduled for a jump after the gas balloons launch. So now they came in between, and it was already night. That made you see the lighted suits very well … but the camera really had a hard time.

Sehenswert waren die Springer auf jeden Fall!

In any case, the parachuters were well worth seeing!

Auch für nach den Gasballons war die Dronen-Licht-Show geplant, die wurde jetzt auch vorgezogen.

The drones light show had also been planned for after the gas balloons, that was now also pushed up.

Heute waren ja die Ballons der Hauptpunkt.

Um 20:30 ging es endlich los. Jede Crew wurde ausführlich vorgestellt, dann wurde die jeweilige Nationalhymne gespielt, und der Ballon hob ab.

At 8:30 p.m. finally the launch started. Each crew was portrayed in detail, then the respective national anthem was played and the balloon took off.

Auch drei deutsche Teams waren dabei. Es ist ein Wettbewerb, bei dem es darum geht, wer mit seinem Ballon am weitesten kommt. Circa fünf Tage werden sie in der Luft bleiben!

There were also three German teams taking part. It is a competition where the challenge is to see who gets the farthest. They will stay in the air for about five days!

Nachtrag: Gewonnen hat das zweite Team aus Frankreich. Sie sind am 10. Oktober gelandet und hatten dabei eine Distanz von 2.661,40 km zurückgelegt. Dabei haben sie North Carolina erreicht.

Addendum: The winner was the second team from France. On 10 October they landed and in doing so had covered a distance of 2,661.40 km. Thus they reached North Carolina.

Heute wird es für den ganzen Tag nur ein Thema geben: Die jährliche Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque started heute. Oh, und „für den ganzen Tag“ heißt, wir sind um vier aufgestanden! Denn um 5:45 gehts los, und unsere Unterkunft ist 10 Minuten enfernt …

Today will have just one big theme for the whole day: The annual Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque will start today. Oh, and “for the whole day” means, we got up at four! Because the thing will start at 5:45 and our lodging is ten minutes away …

Wir wussten, es würde viel Verkehr geben, weil alle zum gleichen Ort wollen … da waren Schulbusse als Shuttles unterwegs, viel Polizei überall, die uns dann auch glatt vom näheren Parkplatz zu dem oben im Norden geleitet haben … und dann standen wir auf dem Highway Ewigkeiten und haben nur das Ende der „Drone Show“ aus dem Auto gesehen.

We knew there would be much traffic, because they all want to get to the same spot … there were school busses functioning as shuttles, lots of police all over, who then did wave us on from the closer parking lot to the one farther up North … and then we stood on the highway for ages and could only see the end of the “drone show” from the car.

Um 7:45 waren wir endlich am Parkplatz … dann mussten wir im Dunklen noch ein Stück laufen und konnten die „Dawn Patrol“ schon von weitem sehen.

At 7:45 we had finally reached the parking lot … and then we had to walk a fair bit in the dark and could see the “Dawn Patrol” from afar.

Diese “Morgenparade” war sehr schön anzusehen.

This „morning parade“ was very nice to watch.

Natürlich sieht man die Ballons so früh morgens am besten, wenn sie die Brenner feuern.

Naturally, this early in the morning you see the balloons best when they are blasting the burners.

Einfach toll!

Hier und da werden die Brenner getestet.

Allmählich wird es auch heller … Am Boden werden die nächsten fertig gemacht.

And slowly it is getting light … On the ground the next batch is getting ready.

Und die, die dann kommen, liegen schon am Boden ausgebreitet.

And the ones to come after that are already laid out flat on the ground.

Denn später sollen alle gleichzeitig in der Luft sein.

So, der Ballon neben uns ist jetzt dran. Es ist toll, dass man direkt daneben stehen darf!

Dann kamen mehr und mehr figürliche Ballons – wird das ein halbes Hähnchen?

Wir haben die wildesten Figuren gesehen!

We saw the craziest shapes!

Jede Menge Tiere gab es, Hunde, ein Schweinchen, eine Kuh und auch Elefanten.

Lots of animals were to be seen, dogs, a piglet, a cow and also elephants.

Und so viele Pinguine!

And so many penguins!

Aber es gab auch bei den „einfachen“ Ballons unterschiedliche Formen.

But also with the „simple” balloons you have different shapes.

Ja, wir hatten Spaß!

Yes, we had fun!

Man kann nicht alle auf ein Bild kriegen. Aber die Windverhältnisse sind hier so, dass die Ballons nicht abgetrieben wurden.

You cannot get them all onto one photo. But the wind conditions here are so that the balloons did not drift away.

Aber wie immer gibt es Leute, denen es so viel wichtiger ist, von sich selber gute Bilder zu kriegen. Der Aufwand, der da betrieben wird!

But as always, there are people who are much more concerned about getting good pictures of themselves. The lengths they go to!

Es gab auch einen kleinen Zeppelin …

Als die Ballons alle wieder am Boden waren, hat die berittene Polizei ein Stück Land von Leuten „frei gemacht“.

When the balloons were all back on the ground, the police mounted “cleared” a piece of land of people.

Denn jetzt kamen vier Helikopter.

Because now four helicopters landed.

Militär und auch Polizei.

Military and also police.

Da gab es dann natürlich viel Andrang … aber es gab ja noch andere Flieger.

There was quite a rush of course … but there were also other flyers.

Wir machen jetzt auch den Abflug. Es ist bald Mittag, und wir sind sehr, sehr müde!

We will now also do a take-off. It is almost noon, and we are very, very tired!

Wir sind wieder auf der Straße … aber heute wurde es öfter staubig.

We are on the road again … but today it got dusty more than once.

Aber der Ausblick ist es wert am „Angel Peak Badlands Overlook“!

Aber wenn man langsam fahren muss, kann man auch die Landschaft besser genießen!

Dann endlich waren wir am Parkplatz. Wir haben die Wanderstiefel angezogen und sind los.

Then finally we had reached the parking lot. We put on our hiking boots and off we went.

Und gleich ging es mit tollen Ausblicken los.

Immer wieder gab es tolle Farben zu bewundern.

Time and again there were great colours to enjoy.

Wie man sehen kann, sind wir wieder früh morgens unterwegs. Schick, der Bodennebel!

As you can see, we are once again up and about early in the morning. Pretty, that ground fog!

Aber je näher wir unserem Ziel, dem Palo Duro Canyon State Park, kamen, desto schlimmer wurde der Nebel!

But the closer we got to our destination, the Palo Duro Canyon State Park, the worse the fog got!

Wenn man nah genug war, konnte man schon sehen, wie toll die Ausblicke hier wohl wären …

When you were close enough, you could see, how spectacular the views here probably are …

Andererseits: Den Linienschwärmer, einen Nachtfalter, hätten wir sonst wohl nicht gesehen!

On the other hand: The white-lined sphinx, a night moth, we might not have seen otherwise!

Wie Kolibris flattern die Falter vor den Blüten, aus denen sie sich ernähren.

Like hummingbirds, the moths hover in front of the flowers out of which they feed.

In der Ferne wird das Wetter wohl besser … wir stoppen also nicht hier in der Gegend für eine Wanderung, wie geplant, sondern fahren erst mal die Straße, die den Park durchzieht, entlang.

In the distance the weather seems to get better … so we do not stop here abouts for a hike, as we had planned, but rather drive down the road that runs through the park.

Natürlich halten wir immer mal an für Blicke in die Gegend. Die hier scheinen auch auf besseres Wetter zu warten.

Naturally we stop every once in a while to take a look into the surroundings. These here also seem to wait for better weather.

So langsam sind die Truthahngeier dann aber doch abgeflogen.

One by one the turkey vultures did take off after all.

Ein Stück weiter haben wir in der Ferne eine Höhle gesehen.

A bit farther on we saw a cave in the distance.

Hier habe ich bis zu 16 Geier gleichzeitig fliegen sehen!

Here I watched up to 16 vultures in the air at the same time!

Ja, und irgendwann gab es wieder wunderbar blauen Himmel und Hitze! Da kann man den Canyon so richtig genießen!

Yes and eventually we were back to having a wonderfully blue sky and heat! That way you can really enjoy the canyon!

Wir haben natürlich auch wieder ein paar Tierchen entdeckt!

Of course we also did spot some little animals here and there!

Wir sind morgens durch das Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge gefahren und haben so ein bisschen gehofft, dass wir nochmal Bisons oder Longhorns sehen … Aber wir hatten sogar noch mehr Glück:

In the morning we drove through the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and were hoping to maybe again spot bisons or a longhorn … But we were even more lucky!

So viele Murmeltiere, und es macht soviel Spaß, ihnen zuzusehen.

So many marmots, and it is such fun to watch them.

Aber wir wollen ja eigentlich zur „Holy City“. 1926 hat ein Geistlicher hier für seine Schüler die Stationen aus Jesus‘ Leben aufgebaut.

But we really are on our way to the “Holy City”. 1926 a reverend here set up the stations of Jesus’ life for his pupils.

Ob hier normalerweise Herodes sitzt?

Seit 1927 werden die Passionsspiele hier für die Besucher gezeigt, 1930 kamen bereits 6000 Leute.

Since 1927 the Passion Play is performed for the public here, 1930 they already had 6000 visitors.

Die kleine Kapelle strahlt Wärme aus, sehr einladend!

Man kann aber das ganze Jahr über die Anlage besichtigen. – Wir haben dabei auch wieder eine Menge Tiere entdeckt.

But you can visit the site all year long. – And in doing so, we once again spotted a lot of animals.

Zum Beispiel Rotschwanzbussarde, oder später dann einen Halsbandleguan …

For example redtailed hawks, or later then a collared lizard …

Irgendwann haben wir uns losgerissen und wieder auf den Weg gemacht. Und wir haben noch etliche Male Longhorns und Bisons gesehen unterwegs …

Eventually we had to tear ourselves away and got going again. And on the way we did see longhorns and bisons several times …

Aber dann haben wir doch tatsächlich einen Koyoten gesehen!

But then we actually did see a coyote!

Anders herum hat er sich bestimmt gedacht, sieh an, heute hab ich Touristen aus Deutschland gesehen!

And the other way around, it probably thought, look here, today I spotted tourists from Germany!

Weiter gehts … wir haben noch eine gute Strecke Weg zu fahren. Vorbei an Alpacas …

On we go … we still have a good long way to go. We pass alpacas …

Bei all der Fahrerei muss man auch mal was essen. Im Main Street Grill in Hobart wurden wir sehr freundlich empfangen. Und das Essen sieht jetzt nicht nach viel aus, aber es war super lecker!

And with all that driving you also need to get something to eat every once in a while. In the Main Street Grill in Hobart we were treated in a most friendly manner. And the food might not look like much, but it was extremely tasty!

Wie wir wieder gefahren sind, hat es angefangen zu regnen und den ganzen Nachmittag nicht mehr aufgehört. Um uns herum haben wir es auch immer wieder blitzen gesehen.

When we left again, it started to rain, and the whole afternoon it did not stop. All around us we saw lighting here and there.

In Claude hat es dann so langsam aufgehört zu regnen. Sehr schön, auf diese Weise konnten wir die Wandmalerei fotografieren.

In Claude the rain started to let up more and more. Very nice, that way we could take a picture of the mural.

Und dann haben wir unser heutiges Ziel erreicht: Amarillo. Und da als erstes „Combine City“:

Wir sind wieder früh aufgestanden und haben uns ein paar Sachen in Dallas angesehen. Als erstes das „Eye“. Seit 2013 steht diese 30 Fuß hohe Skulptur von Tony Tasset hier.

We again got up early and looked at a few things in Dallas. First of all the “Eye”. This 30 foot high sculpture by Tony Tasset has been standing here since 2013.

Dann sind wir zum Thangsgiving Square. Da gibt es neben vielen Wasserspielen und drei Glocken …

Then we went to the Thanksgiving Square. There next to water games and three bells …

Ja, irgendwann mussten wir uns losreißen. Wir haben dann Dallas verlassen und sind weitergefahren nach Bowie. Der Name lässt einen sofort an das gleichnamige Messer denken … und hier ist eines, sogar im Guinnessbuch der Rekorde verzeichnet:

Wir haben ein bisschen über Jim Bowie gelesen, nach dem die Stadt benannt wurde, und sind dann weiter nach Wichita Falls, wo es natürlich einen Wasserfall gibt, präsentiert hier:

Dann ging es weiter nach Lawton, wo wir unsere nächste Unterkunft bezogen haben: ESA! – Das lässt uns natürlich an die Europäische Weltraumorganisation denken, ist es aber nicht, sondern Extended Stay America 😊

Then on we went, to Lawton, where we moved into our next lodging: ESA! – Of course that right away makes one think of the European Space Agency, but that’s not what it is, rather Extended Stay America 😊

Und dann haben wir noch einen Ausflug gemacht, in das Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, wo es viel zu sehen gibt. Als erstes haben wir ein Langhornrind gesehen:

And then we went on another excursion, into the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, where there is much to see. First of all we spotted a longhorn:

Aber berühmt ist die Gegend wegen der Bisons. 1907 wurden die ersten 15 Tiere per Zug aus einem Zoo in New York hierher gebracht und wieder angesiedelt. Und wir haben auch bald eine ganze Herde gesehen. An meinem Schatten könnt Ihr erkennen, wie nah wir waren.

But the area is best known for its bisons. 1907 a train brought the first 15 animals from a zoo in New York and they were resettled here. And soon we did spot a large herd. My shadow shows you how close we were.

Die Tiere laufen frei herum – und wenn sie die Straße überqueren wollen, haben sie ganz klar Vorfahrt.

The animals run freely – and when they want to cross the road, they clearly have the right of way.

Wir haben ihnen lange zugesehen …

We watched them for a long time …

Aber irgendwann sind sie gegangen, und wir auch.

But then finally they did leave, and we did as well.

Wir sind nur noch ein bisschen herumspaziert, wie diese Ameisenwespe.

We then went for a bit of a stroll, just like this velvet ant.

Wir haben die hügelige Landschaft und die samtige Luft genossen. Oh, und die angenehme Temperatur, nachdem es tagsüber wieder bis zu 95°F gewesen war …

We enjoyed the hilly landscape and the velvety air. Oh, and the agreeable temperature, after a day during which the high had been 95°F once again …

Ja, so lässt es sich leben!

Aber irgendwann kommt dann doch der Hunger, wir werden uns jetzt auch mal was zu essen besorgen, wie diese Zimmermannsbiene (xylocopa virginica).

Wir sind wieder früh aufgestanden und im Morgengrauen noch einmal zum Caddo Lake zurück.

We once again got up early and drove back to Caddo Lake at the crack of dawn.

Die Wolken und der Morgennebel sorgten für schöne Anblicke.

The clouds and the morning fog created pretty views.

Beim See war es dann schon schön sonnig, wenn auch noch etwas kühl.

At the lake then it was already nice and sunny, if a bit fresh.

Wir haben einfach den Morgen genossen und den verschiedenen Tierchen zugesehen: Kleinen Fischen, schlanken Spinnen, Libellen, einem Eichhörnchen …

We simply enjoyed the morning and watched all the different small animals: Tiny fish, narrow spiders, dragonflies, a squirrel …

… oder auch einer winzigen Kröte …

… or also a very tiny toad …

Dann gab es viel Gezwitscher und Geflatter, als eine Gruppe Rotkardinäle für eine Weile das Gebüsch neben uns übernahm.

Then there was a lot of twittering and wing flapping, when a group of Northern Cardinals took over the bushes to our left for a while.

Die Männchen sind schon der absolute Hingucker.

The males are quite an eye-catcher, really.

Wie wir schon wieder los wollten, kam der nächste Schwarm Vögel: Weißaugen-Vireos.

And when we were just about to leave again, the next flock of birds dropped by: white-eyed vireos.

Schön war es, wenn auch die Ruhe immer mal wieder durch Schüsse unterbrochen wurde … hier wird auch gejagt.

It was very nice, even if the quiet was interrupted by shots every once in a while … there is also hunting going on here.

Wir sind dann weitergefahren … durch „Love“, wo nicht viel mehr als ein Kirchlein steht. Oft hat man den Eindruck, da hat man erst am Schluss dran gedacht, dass noch so etwas wie ein Kirchturm fehlt, also musste irgendwo aufs Dach immerhin noch so ein Zacken …

We then drove on … through “Love” where there was not much more than a little church. Often you have the impression that only at the very end they realized that something like a church tower was missing, so they added a spike somewhere on the roof …

Weiter ging es duch Daingerfield, wo es außer dem extra-i nichts interessantes zu sehen gab, in einen Ort, der wegen eines Friedhofes bei Reisenden bekannt ist.

On we went, through Daingerfield where apart from the extra i there was nothing exciting to see, to a place which among travelers is known because of a cemetery.

Denn hier gibt es eine Jesusfigur in Cowboystiefeln!

Because here they have a Jesus statue in cowboy boots!

Wir haben zwei Stunden hier verbracht! Der Leiter des Friedhofes hat extra einen Angestellten angerufen und kommen lassen, um uns eine Broschüre mit einer Liste von Gräbern interessanter Leute zu bringen. – Da gibt es zum Beispiel das Grab von Elizabeth Hoyle Hodges, genannt „Buffy“.

We spent two hours here! The manager of the cemetery just for us called an employee and had him bring us a brochure with a list of gravesites of interesting people. – There is for example the grave of Elizabeth Hoyle Hodges, called “Buffy”.

Eine Menge Libellen flogen herum, und auch Schmetterlinge.

A lot of dragonflies were about and also some butterflies.

Aber jetzt ab nach Dallas! Endlich waren wir in unserem tollen Zimmer mitten in der Stadt im 19. Stock im Magnolia Hotel.

But now off to Dallas! Finally we did reach our great room right in the middle of the city, on the 19^th floor in the Magnolia hotel.

Gebaut im Jahre 1922 war dieses 400 Fuß hohe Gebäude mit 29 Stockwerken das erste klimatisierte Hochhaus der Vereinigten Staaten und es war der erste Wolkenkratzer der Stadt.
